The Example Set by the Soil, 2011
I attempted to fly out of Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport with suitcases full of soil from my mother’s land in Palestine. Israeli officials denied me permission to export the soil, citing the “holiness” of the land. Later I transported the Palestinian soil into Jordan by car and was able to bring it to Michigan, where I shoveled the American soil from my mother’s grave and then buried her again with earth from home.
